My kids are never satisfied to simply ride in the car in silence. For that reason, we often keep books on cd in the car for them to hear as we drive to run errands, on trips, etc. We also make up stories, sing songs, play I Spy, play the "jewel" game that my brother and sister and I made up many years ago, look for letters on signs, and on and on. Sometimes we play Bible games, too. Especially when all 4 of us are riding and there are both parents to help the little ones. Here's a summary of our favorites.
Bible Alphabet Game
For this game, we alternate turns and go through the alphabet naming something (or someone) that starts with each letter of the alphabet. For instance, I go first and say A-Abraham, then my daughter say B-Babel, etc. If we play more than one round, we aren't able to repeat the ones from previous rounds (except for Q and X, as there are very limited choices for those!). Sometimes, we even have to tell something about the word we give or the story it is found in. If we get really adventurous and name something the others don't know about, we make a note to look it up when we get home. I'm always amazed at some of the words my little ones come up with in this game! It's a good game for teamwork, keeping them focused, and working on spelling and letter sounds.
Bible Alphabet Game #2
For a variation on the above game, we do the same thing with one exception. Instead of going in alphabetical order to find words, whoever's turn it is must come up with a word that starts with the last letter of the previous word. For instance, if I came up with GOD as my word, whoever went next would have to name something from the Bible that starts with D. Let's say they picked Delilah. Then, player #3 would have to start with H. And so on. This one gets a little trickier, but it is good for when we need to mix things up a little.
20 Questions
This is my kids' favorite. So much so that, at times, I find myself dreading the inevitable question as we pull out of the driveway... "Mommy, can we play 20 questions???" Don't get me wrong. I LOVE teaching them about the Bible and playing Bible games, but with a 4 year old choosing the category, this game can be more than a little challenging! You play it the same way as basic 20 questions, you just have to choose Bible characters. Note: 4 year olds always want to trick you by picking an angel or an animal...so just beware! :) Player #1 chooses someone from the Bible (we don't allow inanimate objects...just too hard to narrow down!). The other players take turns trying to narrow it down: "Is it a man?" "Is it a woman?" "Is she in the Old Testament?" "Is she a queen?" "Is it Esther?" Etc. The possibilities are endless, and the kids have to really think about the stories to answer (or ask!) the questions correctly. Our Bible knowledge has collectively grown by leaps and bounds using this method!
Note: We've recently started using this for Bible drills. Daddy chooses a book for them to find during Bible drills, but instead of telling them the book, they have to ask questions. As soon as they figure out what book it is, they can turn there. Rules include not asking "Is it the 1st book, is it the 2nd book, etc." They have to ask ABOUT the book. "Is it in the OT?" "Is it a book of the Law?" "Does it tell about Moses?" Etc. This is really helping them learn the divisions of the Bible as well as basic facts about each book.
Bible Charades
This one isn't a car game, but the kids love it. They (or we) act out a Bible story and everyone else has to guess. It's funny to see what details they do (or don't!) include.
Bible Pictionary
Just like regular Pictionary, someone draws a picture about a Bible story and the rest of us have to guess.
