Almost a year ago, I started having unexplained pain in my left leg, beside the shin. I have been to several doctors, some nurse practitioners, and a good friend of mine who is well-versed in health science. All seemed to think it was a muscle problem and told me to just rest it some, ice it some, and go about my daily routines as normal. However, nothing I did seemed to help, and my foot and leg started swelling daily. So, I finally went to see an orthopedic dr., who, after inconclusive x-rays, sent me to a sports medicine dr. in the area. I saw him a few weeks ago and he ordered an MRI. Yesterday, I went for the results. Here's essentially how the conversation went.
Him: "Good to see you again. Did you go out and try to "push" your leg and do some running like we discussed."
Me: "Yes, but it HURT."
Him: "Let me push on one spot and see if it hurts."
Me: YES! STOP!
Him: Well, the good news is, it's not one of the conditions we discussed previously. (Note: They were NOT good). The bad news? You have stress reaction, or pre-stress fracture. You will need a tall boot on your foot at all times and no pain for at least 6 weeks. Anything that causes pain, such as standing, needs to be avoided, including dishes, laundry, and cooking. If something hurts, don't do it. If you are hurting, use crutches.
Me. Um....yeah, right!!!
Him: See you in 6 weeks, good luck!!
Me, in my head: (How in the WORLD is this going to work?!?! Don't panic!!)
So, I came home yesterday and sprung the news on my poor hubby and kids, and they were understandably overwhelmed and frustrated (as was I!). It is going to be a huge adjustment for all of us, but ever since yesterday morning, I've been trying to see the hidden blessings in this situation. Here's what I have so far:
1. It could be worse. It could be my driving leg!
2. It could be worse. It could be one of the other conditions we thought it might be.
3. It could be worse. I could not have such an amazing husband!
4. This will force me to turn over some of the jobs and chores I do because it's "easier" for me to do them.
5. My kids will be forced to think of someone else and to learn to do a few things on their own.
6. My house will have to get cleaned up b/c I can't afford to keep tripping over everything.
7. I will have to rest. I need rest badly, but how many moms or women truly take the time to rest when they need it?
